Hey there! A new year, and especially a new decade, means it’s time to set some new blogging goals for the year! This is your year to make your blog take off and it starts with some goals! If you don’t know where to start, that’s okay. These goal ideas and goal setting tips are going to help you take your blog to success!
Blogging Goals for 2020
1. Set Your Blog Up for Success
Setting up your blog for success will help you in the future when you try and monetize and expand your business. If you’re looking to expand beyond blogging at one point, then you’re going to want to build a strong foundation from the start.
Self Host Your Blog
This is one of the most important ways to set up for success. If you have any idea to make money with your blog in the future, you’re going to want to start off self-hosting your blog. When you self-host your blog, you own your content from the get-go. If you start on a free site like Blogger, or hosted-WordPress, you don’t own your content and can be shut down. I know it can seem scary, but I wish I had gone self-hosted a long time ago. I was on Blogger for over three years before finally switching to self-hosted WordPress, and it was the best decision I ever made.

2. Make Money with Your Blog
If you’ve been thinking about making money with your blog but you don’t think you can, then throw that notion away! 2020 is the year to make money blogging! There are a multitude of ways you can make money with a blog, which include
- Selling digital products
- Selling physical products
- Selling your services
- Selling a membership
- Affiliate income
It’s important that if you want to make money with your blog, you find a way to do so that naturally fits in with your niche. One of the more common ways to make money blogging is with affiliate links because it’s actually a pretty simple concept. You get specific links for things that you already love from affiliate programs related to your niche. Your audience clicks those links and if they make a purchase, whether that specific item or something else on the site, then you get credited with the sale and earn money. It’s one of the easier ways to start making money when you’re just starting out, and you don’t need killer traffic contrary to popular belief.

3. Update Your Old Content
Medical journals, textbooks, even Wikipedia gets updates and your blog content should be getting updated too. I know what you’re thinking, my fashion post needs to be updated? Yes, because eventually, your links will be broken and Google doesn’t like that. Or you’ll update your theme and things will look wonky. Updating old posts doesn’t necessarily mean updating the content, but certain niches do require the updating of the actual content. I highly suggest once a month going back into your old posts and just checking on the links to make sure that they aren’t broken.
4. SEO Optimize Your Content
I feel like 2019 was about mastering Pinterest, but 2020 will be about mastering SEO. Having people find your content through Google is one of the most rewarding things. It does take a lot of work to get the Google algorithm to work for you, but it can be very rewarding. We know that social media is constantly changing and that some have seemingly become pay-for-play-esque platforms where organic growth is stunted. SEO is something that you constantly need to work on, but it also takes time to see results, so don’t beat yourself up if you’re not seeing results right away.
5. Diversifying Income Streams
Have you ever heard of the phrase “don’t keep all of your eggs in the same basket”? It’s true and it also applies to income streams and your blog. You don’t want to rely on just one income stream, because what if something happens to it?
6. Grow Social Media Presence
Social media is one of the biggest ways to get your content out there and connect to your audience. Every social media platform is different and your approaches to each of them should match the platform. You don’t have to use every social media platform religiously, but you should have a presence on the ones that your target audience is on. Social media should definitely be part of your content strategy, you should be sharing valuable information on social media as well as your blog. But that information you share on social media should attract people to click through to your website, or a landing page so they can get on your email list.
7. Grow Email List
Yes, email lists! Part of me feel like email isn’t as important, but it honestly is. I know, you may feel like you don’t know what to send your email list because I feel that way. I want to try and send them something that they’re not already getting on my blog, something unique and valuable. This is true, you want them to open your emails and stay engaged with you. You can show behind the scenes emails, or more personal emails to get to know you, or tips and tricks that might not fit on your blog. Whatever you decide to share, you need to grow your email list.
8. Strive to Be Consistent
Consistency is key to blogging and growing your business. This is one of the bigger challenges for new bloggers. Make it a goal to stay consistent with your blog. A great way to do that would be to implement time management processes and making sure you’re not taking on more than you can handle at a time.
Creating Your 2020 Blog Vision
Now that you have your blogging goals in mind, it’s time to create your vision. These steps will help you create your blog vision
Step One: Write down your big goals
These are all of your big goals for your blog. Keep it to about four or five big goals for the year.
Here are some of mine:
- I will gain 5,000 Twitter followers
- I will gain 1,000 Twitch followers
- I will launch a new e-book
- I will earn at least $500/month with my blog
Step Two: Break Down Those Goals
You want to break these goals down into actionable goals
- I will gain 5,000 Twitter followers by actively engaging with others on Twitter and sharing personable content
- I will gain 1,000 Twitch followers by consistently streaming and engaging with new followers.
- I will launch a new ebook, and the first step is the idea
- I will earn at least $500/month with my blog by creating more products to sell
Step Three: Brainstorm Money Making Ideas and Content Ideas
It’s important to have a place to write these ideas, whether it’s a notebook you carry with you or the notes app on your phone. Sometimes ideas come to me randomly and I’m afraid I’m going to forget them if I don’t write them down right away
Step Four: Get Personal
You probably have fears about what’s going to happen with your blog during the year, or if you’re going to hit these goals. It’s okay to have these fears, but we want to rewrite the narrative. Your brain believes what you tell it, so if you’re feeding it negativity, then you’re not going to succeed.
- I fear that people will judge me if I don’t show up on Twitter
- I fear that people will not like my content on Twitch
- I fear that people won’t buy my ebook
- I don’t fear if people don’t like my content on Twitter, that’s okay, they’re not my target audience anyway
- I don’t fear if people don’t like my content on Twitch, that’s okay, they’re not my target audience anyway
- I don’t fear that people won’t buy my ebook because it will be a valuable resource for others.
Step Five: Write out where you want to be at the end of 2020
Visualize where you see yourself and your blog at the end of the year and write it down. Then you can go back and revisit and see where you ended up with it.
