Get Yourself Read for Freshman Orientation

Summer is here and that means that it’s time for fun in the sun freshman orientation! Orientation can be very nervewracking, you are thrown a bunch of information about move-in, clubs, academics, and anything they can throw at you but then you also have to pick out your schedule then and there! It’s okay, it’s not the end of the world!

First off, you’ll have your parent {guardian, aunt, etc} with you {up until scheduling} so you won’t be completely alone. Second, they know you’re nervous and are expecting you to ask questions, so ask! So here are some of my tips to help you conquer your orientation! First I’m going to go into what to bring, then I’m going to get into the tips!

What to bring:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Government issued ID
  • Desired classes list
  • Your school’s version of a “major map”
  • Your awesome smile and attitude!

One Sleep: Most orientations start pretty early in the morning and goes for hours so you need to make sure that you’re well rested. You may be super excited to go to orientation, I know I was, but you won’t have as much fun if you don’t get the right amount of sleep.

Two Follow Along/Take Notes: During orientation you’ll probably get a folder {or more than one} full of pertinent information. Follow along with the person when they go through the information, write down any questions and get the answers you need. If you don’t follow along, you risk having important questions with no answers.

Three Ask Questions: Seriously, if you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask it. Chances are that someone else in the same room has that same question. I know that happened to me during orientation but also just in general. They know you’re new, and nervous, they don’t mind the questions!

Four Listen to Your Adviser: I mean, this is a no-brainer but seriously, they have valuable advice on your classes and how to really succeed in your first semester. Starting off right will set you on the right track for the rest of your college career.

Five Make Friends and Have Fun: There are going to be plenty of other students, just as nervous as you, in your orientation group so relax and have fun! These students could be in some of your future classes, or be your best friends for life!

I had a great time at my freshman orientation and I hope you do too! Just relax and have fun!!
