Four Reasons Why You Should Get a Job in College

Happy Monday!
I haven’t posted on a Monday in so long! Whenever I’ve been trying to, the post was never ready in time and I had to post it on Tuesday or wait until Wednesday to post it. Regardless, today I wanted to talk about why college students should get a job when they are in college. Now, this may not be right for every college student, say the honors student studying to get into med school or something. There are certain degree programs where getting a job outside of studying just does not work. However, for most students, it is possible to fit a part-time job into their schedule.

Even though it may seem like getting a job in college is the worst thing ever, it is actually a very good idea. I was very hesitant to get my first {and current} job, I thought it was going to be the worst idea ever. Turns out, it really wasn’t and I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with! I’m glad that I have a job and that I’m going to be finishing my undergrad early! It is possible to do both, and I believe that you should!

Time Management

Time management is something that you are going to need when you enter the “real world”, in fact, you really will need it later on in your college career as well. Your career will be all about time management, no matter what field you choose to go into; you’re going to have to pick and choose what needs to be done first and when you can do it. Getting a job in college shows that you are able to handle more than one thing at once. It shows that you are able to have more than one task on your plate and are able to accomplish them all. College isn’t easy alone, that is a fact; adding a job on to it doesn’t make it any easier. However, showing that you can accomplish your courseload and still be able to hold a part-time job, and maybe even excel that, shows that you are reliable and can handle multiple tasks.

Experience is another thing that employers are going to look for when you start applying for jobs. Today’s job market, it is not enough to have a bachelors degree anymore. Although many places still prefer their candidates to have one, they also want their candidates to have experience on top of that. Although you can get this experience through an internship, you can also get it through a job, because you’re also getting paid to get the experience! When you go into the real world, your high school club leadership won’t really hold up vs. someone who held a job during the last two years of their college career. You may have led that club well, but considering that was probably four years ago and the other person’s is more recent, they would probably be looked at as a better candidate over you.

Spending Money

You want to be able to go out and see the town right? Or, you want to be able to go to a local restaurant and not eat at your dining hall all of the time right? Well, those things require money. Getting a part-time job is able to get you a bit of spending money. If you’re living in the dorms, then you don’t have to worry about paying rent and you probably have a meal plan as well. If you have these things, then you won’t have to spend as much of your money on necessities and are able to spend more on the fun things you want!

Flexible Schedule

Now, this won’t be true for every single part-time job that is out there, but there are definitely places that can offer flexible schedules for college students. If you want a higher chance of flexibility, then check out the jobs that are available on your campus. Most college jobs allow flexible scheduling around finals and classes. If you go to a big university, then you probably live in a college town. There are a lot of places that are willing to hire college students part-time and they are also willing to give you a flexible schedule to make sure that it fits. Why? Because they know that you need the experience and want the spending money.
Like I said, there are some degree programs that make it so a part-time job is just not in the cards, and that is okay. Get your degree and get an internship when needed. However, if you do have the time, I do believe that it is invaluable to get a part-time job while you’re in college. If you don’t want to get a job during the semester, then you can at least get one during the summer to rack up some spending money. Go out and find that part-time job! Who knows, it may help you transition to a full-time position after you graduate?
